You know that feeling when you start something new? Everything is exciting, and you can’t wait to learn. This feeling is familiar for anyone starting a new fitness or training program. You can’t wait to get to the gym to see what’s in store for you that day.
That feeling of excitement is great and highly motivating. But the problem is that the newness eventually wears off. The excitement fades. And your motivation starts to dwindle.
When your motivation decreases, what’s going to keep you going to the gym and staying consistent with your workout routine? Self-discipline.
Here are a few ways that you can develop self-discipline and stay consistent with your workouts:
1. Start small.
It may not seem like it at first, but discipline is a skill. And if you feel like you’re not very good at staying disciplined in your life (yet), you’re not alone. Like any skill, the key is to start small and manageable. Rather than telling yourself that you’re going to work out every day for the next month, set smaller and more realistic goals. Aim for working out three days a week for the next four weeks and see how you do with that. Then, once you’ve set the bar, start raising it bit by bit.
2. Identify obstacles.
Think about your history with creating a consistent workout habit. What have been your strengths, and how have you struggled? Most likely, you’ll be able to identify some obstacles that tend to get in your way. Do you have a tendency to plan to work out at the end of the day, but wind up skipping out? The timing of your workout might be an obstacle. Do you set your alarm for 5am to make an early morning workout and end up hitting snooze? A lack of accountability could be what’s holding you back. Once you’ve identified your obstacles, then you can come up with a plan for how to deal with them.
3. Understand why discipline is important.
Going through the ups and downs of becoming more disciplined is not an easy pursuit. And it can help to have a clear understanding of why it’s important to you. Why is developing the discipline to follow a consistent workout routine important? Where will this skill take you, or what will you be able to accomplish? Once you’re clear on this purpose, write down your intentions and put them someplace where you’ll see them throughout the day. Remind yourself why it matters to you.
