Congratulations Nadine on your one year anniversary with Soul! You’ve been like family right from the start. Now hear a bit of her story below:

In December of 2018, I was at my mom’s house when I developed an excruciating migraine and the sensation of being choked. Thankfully, my cousin (who happens to be a registered nurse at Ryder Trauma Center) was there and decided to take my blood pressure. Now, I had NEVER had any issues with my blood pressure until that very moment – when I was told that my blood pressure was 136/99. I remember that day like it was yesterday. I was at risk of having a heart attack. For a person who has always been healthy, active and fit, this was the final straw and a complete game changer. I know I had let myself go – Life happened. I was eating poorly. I was not exercising. I am in a high pressure, very stressful job. A single mom. In my late 40’s. The “perfect storm” for a heart attack. Yet it took this extreme measure for me to make the necessary changes. Thankfully, I was smart enough to realize that I was not immortal and it was time to make drastic changes in my lifestyle.

After meeting with my primary care physician, I embarked on my journey to become the best version of myself. I was not interested in being placed on prescription medication unless it was completely and absolutely necessary. My doctor begrudgingly agreed only if I promised to follow her recommendations – an immediate change in diet and get moving. And so, my journey began to regain control of my life and health. I made the decision to return to the sport I loved and inspired me to get fit – CrossFit.

I met Joe Flores a.k.a. JFlo, approximately nine (9) years ago when I first started to CrossFit. He urged me to go by CrossFit Soul to check out the gym, its members and what it had to offer. I remember walking in, meeting Sean, and instantaneously falling in love with CrossFit Soul. I was not looking to join just any gym. I have never been a fan of weight machines. In all honesty, I was looking to become part of a family. And that was the instant vibe I got the moment I walked into Soul. I watched some of the 5:30 p.m. CrossFit class and was amazed by the chemistry and camaraderie within the group. I decided to give CrossFit Soul a try.

My first class was March 3, 2019 and Sean was there to monitor my every lift, every jump, every movement. Everyone in the class was so welcoming and encouraging. I walked out of Soul telling myself that I was only going to go 3 times a week until I got back into shape. Well, THAT lasted a whopping 2 weeks. By the end of the month, I was hooked and going 5 – 6 times a week.

CrossFit Soul made it very easy for me to commit to attending classes. First and foremost, CrossFit Soul offers a variety of times you can take a class, which made it easy for me to pick and choose the best times to fit my extremely hectic schedule. They also offer a variety of classes. One of the classes I incorporated into my training is the Olympic lifting classes which, being out of the sport for several years, were very helpful in refreshing my memory as to the techniques behind the lifts performed in the CrossFit work-outs. Those classes are run by Coach Andres, who is very knowledgeable when it comes to technique. He has helped tweak my form and become an efficient lifter.

One of the unique things that many gyms do not offer is their CrossFit Soul Kids program. Soul has a program tailored specifically for children. We managed to incorporate CrossFit into my daughter’s gymnastics training. Nothing brought me more joy than being able to work-out with my Emmalicious during holiday WOD’s such as “Murph” and “12 Days of Christmas.”

But even with all the amazing things CrossFit Soul has to offer, what makes this place so special is the sense of community it projects. Soul is a family. Everyone knows each other, if not by name, by face. The coaches always take a moment to say “hello” and are always keeping us posted on upcoming events and/or competitions where Soul athletes are competing so that we can watch and support them. And yes, there is always a big turn-out! And the people really do care about each other. I had a family member pass away recently and I received the news while at Soul. I was immediately surrounded by my teammates who made sure I was ok. We take pride in our Box, our athletes, our coaches and more importantly, each other. My tribe is the 5:30 p.m. crew and they have been there every step of my incredible journey, with encouraging words and never letting me quit. Never.

It has now been a year since joining CrossFit Soul. I have lost 42 pounds, dropped 8 sizes, and have so much energy. I CrossFit about 5 – 6 times a week and love every single second I am at the Box. I am blessed to have such amazing people at CrossFit Soul encouraging me to be become my best version. They have become such an important part of my life. Thank you to all of the coaches and members for always being there and helping me become the best version of myself. I am honored to be part of this tribe. #RunWithUs
